Since many people are staying at home these days, you shouldn’t be surprised if you feel stuck to your couch or computer screen a little too much. Kim Schlessinger, ANP, director of Samaritan’s Employee Health & Safety Program and an occupational health nurse, talks about how too much sitting is bad for your health and gives tips on how to move around more.
Depending on how fit you are, walking can be aerobic, but you have to walk at a speed that raises and keeps your heart rate up. You won’t get it by going to a coworker’s desk or walking around a mall. (This is why counting steps doesn’t tell you much about your fitness level and doesn’t help you lose weight.) However, those steps are still NEAT, so keep moving. If you want to count your activity as cardio, just make it harder.
Different. It counts as exercise if you spend most of your day walking quickly while helping people with activities of daily living (ADLs) and even carrying things. I try to take the stairs at work to get my heart beating faster.
People who use fitness trackers often talk about the number 10,000. For example, you might try to walk a total of 10,000 steps (about five miles) every day by doing all of your normal daily activities. And there’s no doubt that the little things you do every day to move more matter. It’s great that technology could help us figure out that walking to work, parking further away, or taking the stairs are all ways to get exercise.
No matter how much you hate working out, you should do it every day. Walking is a great way to work out because it is low-impact and effective. But does the magic number of 10,000 steps hold up?

If you think of running as a heart-pounding workout, you might wonder if walking counts as cardio. Aerobic exercise, also called cardio, is any activity that makes your heart, lungs, and large muscle groups work harder. All of that could be done with a quick walk.
Can I lose weight at work if I walk around all day?
A recent study found that walking around the workplace can help people keep from gaining weight. People who walked for 15 minutes burned three times as many calories as those who sat or did nothing.

Even though walking isn’t the most difficult form of exercise, it is a good way to lose weight and get in shape. Walking can help you lose fat all over, including belly fat, which is one of the worst kinds but also one of the easiest to get rid of. Fat can’t be cut down on only in some places.
Does brisk walking at work burn calories?
Another study looked at how many calories a group of people burned when they were sitting, standing, and walking. They burned 80 calories per hour while sitting down. In one hour, walking burned 210 calories, and just standing still burned 8 more.
How many steps are too many?
No single number or calculation can be used to figure out how much walking is too much. Some people’s jobs require them to take more than 10,000 steps every day, while others have to work hard to get even half of that number.
Can you lose weight if you walk for an hour each day?
You can make up for some of this loss by eating fewer calories over time or by walking for an hour every day. Depending on how many calories you eat, a 500-calorie deficit per day can cause you to lose between 0.2 and 0.9 kg (0.5 to 2 pounds) per week ( 10 ).
