Even though I’ve worked with computers and laptops before, this is the first time I’ve built one from scratch (installing graphics cards, RAM, hard drives, network cards, etc.). Because I spent money on the parts, I want to be extra careful during the building process. (I’ve read about connecting the PSU to a big piece of metal and using that as a line to ground, but that scares me for a number of reasons, and much of what I’ve read suggests that grounding to a big piece of metal is fine.) I bought something with a wrist strap that I plan to put on the unpowered case. I’ll be working on a wooden table in a room with no carpet, where the temperature will be between 30 and 50% relative humidity. So, the main question I have is whether I should build without shoes. My friend, who has built more than one PC, says that building is easier if you walk around barefoot. Does that really need to be done? Is it going to be hard to wear shoes and socks? To be clear, I want to be very careful without being too cautious.

I take my time when I need to buy something that costs more than $5. I do my homework slowly, shop around for prices, and then do more homework. So, when I found out last Christmas that I needed a new computer because I couldn’t edit movies on the one I had, I was ready to get to work and spend weeks researching.
Some computer parts may also be harder to use if you wear rubber gloves. Working with the motherboard installed, for example, is the hardest because our fingers have to fit into very tight spaces. Adding another layer doesn’t seem to help much.
