When planning the layout of your office, keep in mind that a standard desk chair needs about 42″ x 42″ (107cm x 107cm) of space. This is about 20 to 30 inches (50 to 76 cm) behind the chair at the desk. If you leave this much space behind you, it will be easier for you to reach a credenza or bookshelves.

So, how much space does a desk need? You need about 3 feet (92 cm) of space behind your desk for a chair. You have three feet to move the chair away from the desk and sit down or stand up. If you have a standing desk, you don’t need more than 3 feet to be able to push your chair all the way back and stand in front of it. In this case, I would suggest 4 feet.

Based on how much space one person needs to sit in a chair, the minimum size is 24 feet. In fact, we need a little more space on a desk to spread out. When two people stand next to each other, they can share the space in the middle.

A freestanding desk should be between 48 and 72 inches wide, between 24 and 36 inches deep, and 30 inches tall. Between the desk and the back wall, file cabinets, or bookshelf, there should be at least 33 to 36 inches of space to make it easy to move around and get to the file cabinets. If you want to put two chairs across the desk, you should have at least 48 inches of space on the other side.

For easy movement, there should be a 42-inch (107 cm) square area around an office chair, and at least 20 to 30 inches (50 to 80 cm) of space behind the desk. There should be at least 36 inches between the office chair and the wall if they are close together.

If you want to use your desk for typing and computer work, make sure it is between 712mm and 762mm deep so you have enough room for your equipment and can set it up right.

Depending on how you place your screen, you’ll need a certain amount of room (s). We recommend leaving 3–4 inches of space behind the desk when using the standard Jarvis Monitor Arm so that you can use the arm’s full range of motion.
