I chose balsa wood for the drawer fronts because I’m not very good at heavy-duty DIY, especially when it comes to using power saws. I chose them because I didn’t need a power saw to cut them. I could just use my utility knife and a metal straight edge. I also liked that they were thin enough that they didn’t stick out past the front of the cabinet. I put three 4-inch slats on each of my 12″ tall drawers. Use 3-inch slats for a unique look. It all comes down to taste.
After the clear coat had dried completely, glue was used to stick the wood slats to the metal drawer fronts. I used a zigzag pattern to put a lot of it on the edges and back of each piece. I then put them in the drawers with care. Since the glue doesn’t dry right away, you will need to use painters tape or something else thin to hold it in place.
I used four pieces of 2″ x 6″ x 8′ long wood for the desk top. Most lumber has edges that are rounded. I used my table saw to make a straight cut so I could get rid of the rounded corners and have a nice clean edge.
I used 2-1/2′′ pocket screws and wood glue to put the pieces of wood together. I quickly drilled holes on the bottom of each board with my Kreg pocket hole jig.

With new paint, a wood top and front, new drawer pulls, and a pair of three-rod DIY Hairpin Legs, a vintage industrial apothecary cabinet was given new life as a stylish storage solution.
Now it was time to put together the desk! The first thing to do was get the wood. I chose Pine 16 planks from Home Depot because they were cheap. For my desk to be about 28 inches deep, I needed five. One of the most important parts is this! Pick pieces of wood that fit together as well as possible. Since the wood might be warped, it won’t fit together perfectly. You just want to find the best things for yourself. We spent about an hour on this. Get ready to have to wait!
